Is AC Maintenance Necessary Each Year? And Other Questions

service-reminder-badgeThe start of spring is only two weeks away. The weather may not follow the calendar exactly—we’re all used to rain coming at any time here in Oregon—but it’s definitely going to be on a warming trend from here on out. And that means it’s time to get your air conditioning system ready to keep you cool through all the hot days of summer.

Why do this in spring?

Because you want to beat out the first hot day, which can certainly arrive before the first official day of summer. The mild weather of spring is an ideal time to arrange for services for both your heater and your air conditioning. Maintaining an AC in spring gives you extra time to arrange for any repairs you may need before the heat arrives. And because HVAC technicians have less busy schedules in spring, it’s easier to find a convenient time for your air conditioning maintenance appointment.

Is this necessary every spring?

Technically, maintenance isn’t necessary at all. But if you want your air conditioner to run reliably, with little chance of it breaking down or wasting energy, then you should definitely have it done annually. Every HVAC contractor will tell you the same thing: an air conditioning system requires fewer repairs and will enjoy a longer lifespan if it has a check-up and tune-up each year from professionals.

Is there a way to do maintenance on my own?

No. There are some simple maintenance tasks you can take care of during the season, such as regularly checking on the air filter to see if it needs to be swapped out for a new one and making sure the outside condenser cabinet is kept free of leaves and other debris that might block it. Otherwise, the work involved in cooling system maintenance requires HVAC training, knowledge of refrigeration systems, and special tools to handle jobs like checking refrigerant pressure and measuring electrical output.

And you are professionals, right?

Yes indeed. We’ve been doing this work for more than forty years. We’re licensed and insured, and we have coveted Diamond Dealer status from both Trane and Mitsubishi.

What benefits can I expect from regular maintenance?

Maintenance is an investment in excellent service from your cooling equipment. This investment repays you in multiple ways:

  • A system that lasts twice as long as one without maintenance.
  • Prevention of approximately 85% of repairs the AC might otherwise need.
  • Cleaner air from a cleaner air conditioner.
  • Preservation of the AC’s energy efficiency throughout its service life.
  • General peace of mind that your air conditioner won’t give out on you when you need it.

So how do I get started with maintenance?
